Kachujin: A Narrative Adventure with Innovative Combat
Kachujin is a short narrative adventure with a unique combat system. The game was developed in one week for submission to an itch.io weekly game jam themed "Mountain Climber."
The original idea was to guide a samurai through a mountain pass as he/she was waylaid by enemies. As development progressed, a complex narrative/cinematic system took shape which eventually took priority over other gameplay mechanics.
The combat system mixes QTE (quick time events), and turn based strategy. During combat, each character has an attack speed and interval, displayed by UI elements at their feet. The player must time their attacks so they land within an enemy's weak-point, and block incoming attacks.
There are two main scenes in the prototype, the first introduces the player to movement and combat. The second is an expansive area with multiple areas of interest. Kachujin must defeat enemies while returning to her home, where gameplay ends.
